NFL Veteran Tyrell Johnson Joins Episcopal School as Head Coach

Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock has appointed Arkansas native and former Minnesota Vikings player Tyrell Johnson as head football coach.

Johnson brings a wealth of successful experience as both an educator and coach at Episcopal Collegiate over the past six years. In addition to heading the school’s Strength and Conditioning program, Johnson has served as head varsity track coach, assistant varsity basketball coach and head junior high basketball coach, and has coached football at every level of the School’s program – primary school level (PSL) through varsity.

“Our football program has experienced tremendous growth the past several years under the direction of Michael Carter, and we are delighted that he will continue to serve as our Upper School Dean of Students. With his decision to step back from the program, we are fortunate to have someone of Tyrell’s character and caliber to lead our team and coaches and build upon that success,” said Episcopal Collegiate’s Head of School Dr. Jamie Griffin 

A native of Rison, Johnson received All-State high school honors in football, track and field, and weight lifting, and was a member of the 2000 State Championship football team. His football career continued at Arkansas State University (ASU) where he was awarded All-American honors each of his four years, set numerous Sun Belt Conference records, and was rated as the #1 football safety in the country in 2007. 

In 2008, Johnson was drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings and is a seven-year veteran of the National Football League. Since retiring from the NFL, Johnson has hosted annual skills camps at ASU and various camps throughout Arkansas through his foundation, Faith Works. He was inducted into the Arkansas State University Hall of Honor in 2016. Among his most recent accolades, over this past summer, he was asked to serve as a coach and talent evaluator during the Minnesota Vikings pre-season training camp. 

Johnson had this to say regarding his new role at the School, “I am extremely honored to be named the next head football coach of Episcopal Collegiate. My mission is to build future leaders of tomorrow today. I believe every child has a chance to be successful if we teach, coach, train, motivate, inspire, hold them accountable, and celebrate their success.”
