Men’s Football record a statement victory against L’boro 1sts – BUCS Week 6 – NTU Sport Blog

Welcome to week 6 of BUCS round up, and what a watershed moment for many of our top teams in their premier and national league campaigns. This week we unashamedly focus on those at the top of those sports who produced some fantastic results.

First up this week was the Men’s Football 1^st team, who faced Loughborough University for a 2^nd time this season, this time at home, looking to build on a 1-1 draw away from home and put right 3 games without a win. This was also a repeat of last years National Championship final, so revenge was on the agenda. In a tough match on Clifton campus, as expected from the top 2 teams in the country form last year, the team in pink dug deep and came away with a 2-1 victory after going 1 nil down to set them up for a push for a top seeding place going into the knockout phase of the season.  

As the football was finishing the Women’s Lacrosse 1^st team were just getting started over on the Clifton campus 3G. They also face the rivals down the road, Loughborough. A win would be a huge step in ensuring survival in the top division in the country at the 1^st time of asking. A fast start from the team ensured momentum was with them throughout, and they never relinquished the lead, eventually running out 19-11 winners. They are now looking up rather than down tied with 2 others in the division, with an opportunity to push up the table. 

Keeping the Loughborough University theme, our Men’s 1^st & 2^nd Hockey teams were both away in National League action. Loughborough were national finalists last year and away from home a mammoth task for the team. Our Men’s 1^st Team are however making a name for themselves as disruptors of the old order and put in a stunning display to come away with a 3-1 victory and place themselves top of the league after 3 games. A fantastic achievement with a young team. The 2^nd Team followed suit and put in a great performance, beating Loughborough Men’s 2^nd team 2-1. 

Back at Clifton our Women’s Netball 1^st team were looking for their first victory of their debut campaign in the Premier tier. Many close calls so far meant the team always knew they had a chance. This week they faced a return fixture with local rivals University of Nottingham, who pipped them in the away fixture back in October. A tense game unfolded, as predicted, with both teams giving it everything. The girls in pink however managed to pull away into the 4^th quarter and earn a fantastic 1^st win in the Premier campaign, 45-35. This win gives them a great chance of survival and even looking further up the table.  

Redemption was also in the air when our Men’s Basketball 1^st team travelled to University of Durham for the reverse of their opening fixture of the Premier tier campaign. A close 4-point reverse in that fixture meant there was a chance, with the team growing game by game in the top tier, that they could get the better of the home team in the away fixture. This motivation proved very effective with the team winning by nearly 30 points 85-57, to overtake their opponents into 3^rd place in the league and all but secure premier status.  

Finally, our Men’s Rugby League 1^st team faced their shortest away trip of the year to newly promoted University of Birmingham. A win would also all but secure another season in the Premier tier which would be a fantastic achievement. They took the lead early on and never relinquished it, winning 22-10, moving them to 4^th in the league and more importantly 9 points ahead of bottom team Birmingham and only 1 win off 3^rd.
