Geno Smith and the Seahawks are turning out to be NFL’s most pleasant surprise this year

After Russell Wilson was traded from the Seahawks before the start of the season, many football fans were left wondering who would take over at the quarterback spot.

It was between Drew Lock, who came over from the Denver Broncos in the Wilson trade, and Geno Smith.

Ultimately, the Seahawks chose Smith as their week one starter, and they have not looked back since.

Currently, the Seahawks have found themselves at the top of the NFC West with an overall record of 6-3.

Smith has been a driving force behind their success as he has accumulated 2,199 passing yards and 15 touchdowns while only throwing four interceptions.

His 15 touchdowns are currently tied for 4th most, and his 68.1 quarterback rating puts him also at fourth best.

This past Sunday, Smith and the Seahawks beat the Arizona Cardinals 31-21. Smith passed for 275 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, while also rushing for 38 yards on six carries.

No one expected Smith and the Seahawks to do this well after Wilson left the team, and Smith has embraced the fact that the rest of the NFL community has overlooked his team.

“Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it’s good for people to not place expectations on you and to play as the underdog, I don’t know if that will continue, but it’s kind of good for where we are right now,” Smith said after Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith played quarterback at West Virginia and would later be selected by the New York Jets in the 2nd round at pick 39 in the 2013 NFL Draft.

After being drafted, he would find himself on a couple of teams before making it to the Seahawks. Teams such as the Jets, Giants, and Chargers.

Before coming to the Seahawks in 2020, Smith never could find success anywhere else as he would find himself as a primary backup QB most of the time.

This year’s performance has definitely surprised fans and other NFL viewers, and for WVU fans, seeing the former Mountaineer succeed has been a relief as he is positioning himself and the Seahawks to make some noise in the second half of the season.
