Chargers at Chiefs spread, odds, picks: Expert predictions for Week 2 Thursday Night Football – The Athletic

NFL Week 2 starts with an absolute monster of an AFC West game on Thursday night with arguably the best quarterback matchup in the league. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs host Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs are favored by more than a field goal.

Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video. Injuries are already having an impact on this game. Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen and tight end Donald Parham will miss the game. Chargers cornerback JC Jackson is questionable. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker will miss the game and guard Trey Smith is questionable.

While all four teams in the AFC West had big offseasons, the division might very well come down to these two teams with their head-to-head games making or breaking the division. They were the two most impressive teams in the division in Week 1 and had game-changers at the most important position on the field. They split a pair of close thrillers a year ago, with the Chiefs losing a late lead in Week 3 at home and then getting revenge later in the year with an overtime win in Los Angeles.

Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense looked like a well-oiled machine in its Week 1 demolishing of the Arizona Cardinals and put any concerns of what their offense might look like without Tyreek Hill to rest. Mahomes spread the ball to nine different receivers, threw five touchdowns, and looked like he was already in mid-season form with a clinical performance.

If a quarterback in the NFL can match Mahomes in the “wow” factor, Herbert might be the guy, and he is also coming off a gigantic Week 1 performance against the Raiders. The big concern might be that wide receiver Keenan Allen is unlikely to play due to a hamstring injury.

Expectations are understandably high for the Chargers this season, and they should be a contender with a quarterback like Herbert. But we say that every year about this team, and they always have a way of letting everybody down. Getting a win in Kansas City to start off 2-0, something they have not done in 10 years and only twice over the past 20 years, would go a long way toward making everybody buy in a little more.
